I am beginning to believe the unpublished writers fall into two categories. No, I don't mean mad or insane.
Either they want to be published or they want to write a solid, entertaining story.
Writers who want the latter will work hard to learn the craft of writing and to polish their skills. They use criticism to make their writing stronger. They develop thick skin. They understand this is a business and none here has time to placate their ego.
Writes who just want to be published don't work hard. They think any criticism is an attempt to destroy their dream. They quit at the first sign of rain.
What kind of writer are you?
I have to admit that I've been the sunny sky writer. But then I realized that I'd rather not be published than have my name on dreck. I'm constantly amazed at how many people don't care that their writing is dreck (yet will rant and rave if anyone dare says their writing is dreck).
The sunny sky writer doesn't live in my house any more. I don't deserve to be publish and no one owes it to me to publish my writing. Getting publshed takes hard work and a little luck. By going to conferences and such, I can get a little luck on my side, but the hard work is 100% up to me.
So what kind of writer are you?
